This is one of the most honest and no nonsense interviews with an athlete you’ll hear this year. In 2022 Aussie Jay Vine  won TWO incredible stages at the Vuelta Espana, but he hasn’t had a typical ascent to Grand Tour stage winner. Buoyed by the unwavering support of his best friend and wife, Bre, the Vines embarked on a European odyssey with eyes wide open, determined to make their mark. Both revered e-sports racers, Bre and Jay talk Zwift tactics, and Jay delves into the highs of grand tour stage victories at La Vuelta, and wearing the coveted King of the Mountains jersey, to the lows of crashing out and having his life flash before his eyes. From inside The Wheelhouse Bunker, Jay shares what’s behind his incredible drive and resilience, and the philosophy behind his raw, analytical approach. He opens up about his experiences at Alpecin, and tells us what really drove him to break his contract and head to UAE, and well as why he looks forward to racing alongside Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar. Not afraid to tackle the big issues, the Vines talk about how tough it is for the Aussies to get noticed by international teams, Jay questions the recruitment tactics in the World Tour, shares his thoughts on why he skipped Aussie Road Nats and the mind set behind his meteoric rise + tells us which race he has his eye on in Season 2023. The Vines have such a compelling story. If you love your cycling this episode is a must listen.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week Kate and Joel are enthralled by the Champions League Track Cycling and the antics of the sprinters.  There's BMX Freestyle where Joel learns some new cycling lingo, there's E-Sports + Lachy Morton and Tegan Phillips have Mark Beaumont's epic world records in sight.  The hunt is on for the best named cycling cafe's in Australia, with a clear state emerging as a lover of cycling puns.  As always, it's lots of fun so join us to unpack the week that's been.     See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week episode, spirits are high as Kate returns from a mtb adventure, while Joel narrowly avoids a vicious snake bite. Gerraint Thomas seeks public opinion to plan his race calendar after a disappointing Tour de France route reveal, what the heck is indoor cycling, and what are those moves called? Tom Dumoulin reckons pro athletes are a little crazy, how well does Kate remember the 2022 road cycling season,  and why do athletes have to apply to be on an AusCycling (Cycling Australia) national team? The team traverses thousands of kms around Australia for their Top 5 cycling regions for ride riding, and the AusCycling SheRides Zero to Hero program hits a high note. For something new, there is no mention of Mark “Cav” Cavendish…. As usual it’s a lot fun with the cycling news of the week, so like, follow and share!   Show notes Champion Systems - https://www.champ-sys.com.au/ AusCycling Zero to Hero - https://www.ridenation.com.au/promo/zero-to-heroSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week there’s some excitement in the bunker as Kate and Joel welcome special guest Jordana Blackman, founder and chief chick at Chicks Who Ride Bikes. Having just released a special app for women’s cycling, Jordana now has two things in common with Elon Musk, being a tech wizard, as well as a fan of bikes. At least we assume Elon is a fan given the Model B ebike from Tesla which looks amazing, but leaves some confusion about how the non traditional handlebars work. Musks twitter takeover has us pondering what may happen if he were to buy the Tour De France, and closer to home soil, Aussie  Jay Vine exits his Alpecin team contract early. Pauline Ferrand Prevot makes her Ineos team debut, but it’s a shocker where she easily out performs her faulty bike at Koppenberg cross. Jonas Vingegaard crosses the line first…. But did he win? Lachy Morton is fighting the good fight, and yet again the question gets asked, where is the world in Mark Cavendish going for 2023. As always, it’s a fun one! From the Basque Country, to Paris, via the five mountain regions traversing west to east across France, the 2023 Tour de France men’s route is a climbers paradise. Aussie hopes will be high with Ben O’Connor saying he prefers the 2023 course to years prior, but will Caleb Ewan be thrilled, Kate and Joel suggest not. The Tour de France Femme route will create a suspenseful race, with something for everyone, including a finishing day time trial, and Kate isn’t too impressed by the non-traditional tour finish. The Hashimi sisters fight back after their oppression, Fem van Empel is slaying the cyclocross season, sports funding remains in the spotlight, as ARA Sunshine Coast Pro Racing announce a new title partner, and will Gina Rinehart save the Jayco Herald Sun Tour? Fillipo Ganna’s record breaking ways on the Velodrome make track cycling look glamorous but after the unearthing of a behind the scenes pic of Aussie track sprinter Matty Richardson,  Kate and Joel aren’t so sure. The Para athletes are racing in Paris, with Aussie hopes high. Valverde and The Shark of Messina say au revoir to their competitive cycling careers, but will they leave the legacy they intended? The Giro course for 2023 has been announced and it seems like it was custom built for Remco, Dan Martin thinks pro cycling is boring, but was he taken out of context, and French darling Benoit Cosnefroy is getting married….if his bride to be forgives him for his bucks party stunt.  We run a sharp eye over the announcement of Shell as a sponsor of British Cycling, the backlash and the accusation of greenwashing to win community favour. E-sports season is upon us with the 2023 World Championship format announced, Continental Qualifiers on the horizon, and Zwift Academy finalists announced, and as Joel warms into his new cycling regime, Kate is pleased to share some pro tips that shouldn’t be too imposing to help him on his journey.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
